The Traveling Monkey was built on more than 20 years of experience creating and coordinating educational travel in Costa Rica. Our story began through years of working alongside universities, faculty, study abroad providers, and student groups—learning what makes an international program not only memorable, but meaningful, academically relevant, and thoughtfully executed.

After more than 20 years in the study abroad industry, The Traveling Monkey was created to offer something more personal: the experience and infrastructure of an established program provider with the flexibility, care, and personal attention of a local partner. Today, we specialize in custom faculty-led programs and educational travel in Costa Rica, working closely with faculty and program leaders to transform academic goals into experiences that students can see, touch, question, and understand beyond the classroom.​

Years in the field have taught us that successful programs are built on relationships, preparation, and knowing how to navigate the unexpected. Our experience allows us to anticipate challenges before they become problems and provide the support groups need from pre-departure through their return home.​

We believe the most powerful learning happens when students can connect academic concepts with real people, places, organizations, and communities. Every program is designed with the academic purpose of the group at its center.​

Travel should encourage curiosity and critical thinking.
We strive to present a comprehensive learning experience by including diverse perspectives and shadow reporting—making space for students to consider not only the official or traditional narrative, but also the voices, experiences, and perspectives that may otherwise be overlooked.​

Great educational travel may look effortless, but it takes careful planning behind the scenes. From transportation and accommodations to academic visits, risk management, insurance, and on-site support, we take care of the details so faculty can focus on their students and the experience itself.​​​
